PBL offers a
specific type of learning in which learner are expected to use technology in
meaningful ways to help them investigate, learn or present their knowledge (Blumenfeld, 1991).
Technology can be used to create such environments and facilitate the
activities within them. By thinking of technology as a valuable tool in a
constructivist learning environment, teachers have the power to teach not only
the technical skills but also to help learner create knowledge (Gonzalez et
al., 2006, p.305).
In PBL
class, application of technology facilitates acquisition and learning the
language. As stated earlier learners benefit from a comfortable environment in
which computers are great help to them to improve their English. They can be
independent learners and be on their own by doing the exercises themselves.
Kearsley and Shneiderman (1999)
define engage learning as a situation in which learners are active in their
learning and student activities involve active cognitive processes. With regard
to this definition and constructivism theory, learning is more effective when
learners are engaged in their learning process. Since CALL systems provide such
environment for the learners to apply technology in order to learn and improve
their language, it is assumed that such computer-based systems are helpful to
learners and enhance their language skills.
Vygotsky (1978) in his social constructivism provides a foundation for argumentative, reflective and collaborative activities in technology enhanced learning environments (Blake and Scanlon,2008). With regard to this, it is expected that learners will be able to undertake responsibilities for their own learning, be active in their courses and construct knowledge meaningfully. Moreover, the learners are provided with the opportunities to construct knowledge by interpreting and analyzing in computerized learning environments. Most of the information and communications technologies. The use of computers is the most well know and popular tool in educational context compared with all other kinds of technologies. In contemporary teaching and learning education, computer-assisted instruction takes an important role
(Chang, 2001).
